The ACLU of Oklahoma Foundation seeks a Paralegal in the Legal Department of the ACLU of Oklahoma’s office in Oklahoma City. This is a full-time, hybrid position for the term of one year. It is based in Oklahoma and has in-office requirements on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 

Compensation for this position ranges from $50,000 to $58,000 and is based on the amount and relevance of the candidate’s experience. Relevant experience includes cite checking and finalizing pleadings, federal litigation, and ECF filing. The ACLU of Oklahoma also provides benefits that include paid vacation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with employer match up to 5.5%, life and long-term disability insurance, and generous paid holidays.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma (ACLU-OK) is a nonprofit, non-partisan, privately funded organization devoted exclusively to the defense and promotion of the individual rights secured by the United States and Oklahoma constitutions.

The ACLU-OK comprises of two separate corporate entities, the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma, Inc., and the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma Foundation. WHAT YOU’LL DO

Reporting to the Legal Director, the Paralegal will provide litigation and administrative support to the Legal Department. This includes but is not limited to cite checking and formatting litigation documents, maintaining the litigation calendar, managing files and other documents, and processing and responding to legal intake.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

  • Cite checking, proofreading, finalizing, and filing pleadings in federal courts and occasionally state courts in Oklahoma.
  • Executing, sending, and managing correspondence and legal documents, including letters, motions, court forms, petitions, subpoenas, discovery documents, and requests for public records.
  • Managing the department’s docket, including maintenance of electronic and physical files, court records, and litigation calendars. This includes anticipating and identifying potential litigation tasks and preparing accordingly.
  • Assisting attorneys with investigations, research, and the review of public records. 
  • Conducting legal research, writing research memos, and drafting pleadings. 
  • Providing logistical, administrative, and document management support for hearings, depositions, and trials. 
  • Serving as liaison with co-counsel and clients. 
  • Processing and responding to legal intake.
  • Handling general administrative duties, including processing invoices, tracking expenses and litigation costs, preparing expense reports, assisting with travel arrangements, and ordering supplies.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Completion of an ABA accredited Legal Studies or Paralegal Certificate Program OR experience cite checking, finalizing, and filing pleadings in federal court. 
  • Basic knowledge of the Bluebook and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Strong computer skills with advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to civil rights and social justice consistent with the mission and goals of the ACLU-OK.
  • Willingness to travel within Oklahoma and to, as necessary, work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in constitutional law, civil rights, and/or public interest.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
