OKLAHOMA CITY — In response to the advancement of SB 1859, an unconstitutional bill that bans abortion care at six weeks, the ACLU of Oklahoma issued the following response.
The following is attributable to Nicole McAfee, Director of Policy and Advocacy:
“Senators of the Oklahoma state legislature are continuing the trend of playing partisan politics during an election year, this time through the advancement of SB 1859, an attack on abortion care that directly contradicts Roe v Wade. Simply put, this bill is unquestionably unconstitutional and plays loose with the healthcare of our communities and commits money our state doesn’t have to defend against future legal challenges.
Abortions are safe, medical procedures that are constitutionally required to be accessible. Any attempts to infringe on the rights of pregnant people to access the full range of care will be met with the same tenacity as we have shown in the other states that tried to move similar legislation that was ultimately struck down.”
