This is a limited one-year grant-funded full time (40 hours) position, with the ability to review extension based on future funding opportunities. This position is based in Oklahoma. While the office is remote for the time being, there will be times when it is necessary to be able to access the Oklahoma City office. A return to the office is expected in September 2021.

Compensation for this position is $50,000 with benefits that include paid vacation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), life and long-term disability insurance, and generous paid holidays.

The Work of the ACLU of Oklahoma Foundation

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma is a nonprofit, non-partisan, privately funded organization devoted exclusively to the defense and promotion of the individual rights secured by the U.S. and Oklahoma constitutions.

The ACLU of Oklahoma is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a national not-for-profit, non-partisan, voluntary organization founded in 1920. The ACLU is a nationwide network of staffed offices in every state, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Its purpose is to protect those rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Oklahoma affiliate was established in 1964 and opened its first headquarters in 1973.

The ACLU of Oklahoma has a proud history of advocating in Oklahoma for the rights of institutionalized persons; educators; students; persons who speak out against governmental abuse; women; and minorities of religious, ethnic or racial character.

ACLU of Oklahoma works closely with its national headquarters in New York, its national lobbying office in Washington, D.C. and affiliates in every state across the country and Puerto Rico. It also works in coalition with many other organizations to improve the quality of life for all by preserving freedom.

OBJECTIVES FOR OKLAHOMA ORGANIZER

Key objectives include working with and expanding the number of supporters and members on the ground to ensure the protection of civil liberties in Oklahoma; represent ACLU-OK in community coalitions that; build credibility in the community and with elected officials in order to positively influence programs and decisions that further ACLU-OK’s mission.

The Organizer will work in the advocacy department and report to the Director of Policy & Advocacy. The organizer will also work closely with other members of the American Civil Liberties Union Development, Legal, and Communications teams to lead outreach activities and assist with local fundraising events as needed.

Organizers Responsibilities

  • Conduct organizing in communities, districts, campuses and at public events.
  • Significantly increase ACLU-OK’s member, supporter and volunteer list.
  • Recruit, train and mobilize volunteers and members to help with advocacy goals.
  • Recruit, train and support volunteer leaders including table captains, phone bank captains and action councils.
  • Plan and facilitate regular action council meetings
  • Recruit, train and manage interns.
  • Represent ACLU-OK within local coalitions and with other organizations to implement strategies.
  • Maintain/update activist databases within Votebuilder, track organizing activities and generate monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Policy and Advocacy and Communications Director to plan and implement ACLU-OK sponsored legislative activities, rallies and media events.
  • Work with communications staff to inform ACLU-OK supporters of all local, state and national events that impact civil liberties.
  • Represent ACLU-OK to execute electoral activities if needed.
  • Provide support as needed for ACLU-OK’s Development activities including support for local fundraising events.
  • Attend ACLU-OK staff meetings as specified by department heads.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Experience and Qualifications

Although it is unlikely that any one individual will bring all of the qualifications and experiences listed below, the successful candidate will have many of the following attributes:

  • A smart, intellectually curious, strategic and creative professional, one to three cycles of related experience and/or training in advocacy/organizing work or related area; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office/Word, the Internet, Votebuilder, and relational databases.
  • Must be committed to inter- and intra-agency teamwork.
  • Must be energetic, creative, motivated, a self-starter, and able to function productively and effectively with a degree of autonomy.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • A multi-disciplinary thinker with excellent analytical skills and the ability to understand new concepts and complex subjects, to translate ACLU-OK’s mission and work to diverse constituencies, to solve problems and to exercise good judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intellectual depth and professional maturity to work with cross-functional teams to create and execute successful organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Must be able to travel within Oklahoma.
  • Preferred experience working with a variety of age-groups, including teens.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Commitment to exceptional work quality and standards.
  • Principled, ethical, and professional.
  • A high level of enthusiasm, energy, initiative, and drive.
