The ACLU of Oklahoma released the first of a seven-part video series showcasing the human rights catastrophe within the Oklahoma County jail. The series is inspired by this week’s “Wheel of Justice” gimmick on local news featuring the Oklahoma County Sheriff. A host spun a wheel of men and women charged with a variety of crimes then asked the public for help apprehending the “winner” of the spin. This type of “game show” coverage has been aired in a handful of states across the U.S., so ACLU Community Organizer, Candace Liger, took the idea in a new direction.
The ACLU created a version entitled “Wheel of Injustice” which will address the jail’s inhumane conditions, jail fines and fees, racial disparities, the rotating door of OCPD jail, mental health and addiction, jail staffing problems, and overcrowding. The first video dropped today and the next six will be released on a weekly basis.
This series begins as Oklahoma County Sheriff campaigns kick off ahead of the September 12 election. The ACLU of Oklahoma has prepared a candidate’s questionnaire which will be released for candidates to answer later this summer, and also plans to host a Sheriff’s Forum at the end of the summer. The ACLU hopes to bring attention to the very serious issues facing the next elected Oklahoma County Sheriff, and to increase awareness of this election that often sees low voter turnout.
